Shashamane Fact-Finding

Members of the Ethiopian World Federation Incorporated visit Shashamane City on a fact-finding mission and to identify opportunities for partnership working.

Develop Urban Parks Development
Former landfill was previously used by youths engaged in anti-social behaviour. Today the landfill site has been transformed into a beautiful well used urban park.

Edduu Maadaa School Supply IT Equipment
School built by EWF Inc members, the Pipers in the 1960s, is now one of the biggest schools in the area. Here a new IT block has been completed but there are no computers, software or WiFi. anIt’s used as a regular classroom.

Awasho Orphanage Socio- Economic Support
Children whose parents can no longer look after them, and orphaned children live at Awasho Orphanage.
During fact-finding mission children had no meals,
there was no furniture or water, and the children wore 4th hand clothing donated by the community.

Shashamane Stadium
Shashamane Stadium is used mainly for football, and occasionally other sports. The overall condition is very poor. Stands are dilapidated and the stadium is not well used and very uninviting.

Why Awasho Orphanage?

- Poor sanitation
- Lack of potable water and dehydration
- No furniture
- 70+ orphans and children whose parents cannot look after them
- One voluntary worker who pays two teachers from her own pocket
- Municipality unable to support Orphanage
- Insufficient funds to feed children regularly
- 4th hand clothing

Quick wins were achievable through low- cost interventions that are measurable
Social capital spill over into wider community in terms of learning

Clothes/items collected and taken to Ethiopia.
Following the initial visit of two of our members – Lloyd and Malieka Robinson, it was clear that there was an issue with the clothing of the children who were present.
The issue was that many of the children who attended the Orphanage did not possess a change of clothing and the clothes that they did have was old and worn out.
Based on this finding clothing was made an immediate priority and initiatives came primarily Florida USA and the UK with the first delivery from these locations being brought in …….. by our member Idey from Florida, and items from the UK.
The clothes were distributed by Desta Bukulu our member and previous Shashamane Mayor and our 1st Vice President who had travelled from the UK.
The response from the children, volunteers and some of the parents was wonderful and the need for these clothes became very apparent.
A second delivery of clothing including T Shirts, water bottles, skipping ropes etc., came from Members in the UK (mainly Manchester, Birmingham, and London). These were distributed on site by Members of the School Board, the school co-ordinator, staff, and the local Abba Gada.
As a result of these initiatives many Childrens’ chairs were purchased in Ethiopia, funded by Elaine Tennent who resides in Coventry, UK and delivered by our member Kamba on the ground in Shashamane,.
